Orwell Street Church - Mission Statement UPDATED November 2018
WHO WE ARE
Orwell Street Church is a community of Christians who meet to honour God and encourage each other in following Jesus. We have a heart for those who do not know Jesus Christ, and are focused on seeking opportunities to share His love and message.
We believe a church should function and feel like a close-knit family where loving relationships are developed and valued. We encourage this through Sunday services, meeting in small groups and encouraging each other throughout the week.
Underlying all this is our commitment to the God whom we learn about in the Bible and through Jesus Christ. Consequently, you will hear the Bible taught, explained and related to daily living as we together seek to live for His glory.
Overall, we aim to be a church that is compassionate towards and relevant to the community in which we live, individually and collectively by remaining passionately committed to Jesus Christ and to what the Bible teaches.
WHAT WE BELIEVE
We believe in God, the creator of heaven and earth. We believe He made each of us and knows each of us intimately. We believe He made us to have a deep and meaningful relationship with Him and with each other. He loves us more than we could ever imagine. (Psalms 16:11)
We believe in Jesus, God’s son. We believe that He lived just over 30 years on this earth to show us how to love those around us. But not only that; we also believe he gave His life for us, and then conquered death to make a way for us to have a deep and meaningful relationship with Him and with each other. He loves us more than we could ever imagine. (Mark 10:45, Romans 5:8)
We believe in the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is life, living in those who follow Jesus. The Spirit is the power source enabling us to live life richly and meaningfully. The Spirit is a gift from God sent to help us, to guide us and to point us in the right direction so that we may have a deep and meaningful relationship with God and with each other.
The Father, Son and Holy Spirit have always been, and will always be, in relationship and communication with each other. Not as three gods, but as one God.
We believe in the Church. While it isn’t perfect - because it is made up of people like you and me - we know that the Church has been chosen to be the Body of Christ, the hands and feet of Jesus. We find this somewhat scary and at the same time very exciting.
We believe in the Bible. We don’t claim to understand all of it, but we believe all of it. It is Truth. It is one of the ways God reveals himself to us. We believe the Bible’s purpose is to show us the heart of God and to point us to Jesus.
We believe in Grace. In fact, it is central to our beliefs. Without God’s grace there would be no way to have a deep and meaningful relationship with Him. Jesus died that we might have life. It is a free gift, offered to anyone who will accept it. The gift of life - it can’t be earned. That’s Grace. That’s Jesus. That’s good news.
In fact it is the best news! But if there is good news there must also be bad news. The bad news is that if we don’t accept this gift, we face an eternity separated from God. Jesus died so that we might live. He defeated death so that we might have hope. Believing this brings not only hope but also salvation. (Romans 10:9)
We believe that we are here on earth to love God with all of our heart, soul and mind and to love those around us as well as we love ourselves. We believe that we are to do this as individuals and also as the Church.
We believe that life is not about getting what we want, but about becoming the person God made us to be.
WHERE WE ARE GOING
We are on a train bound for something indescribable, something God calls "glorious," a celebration in honour of Jesus Christ! On the passenger list are winners and losers, leaders and followers, the rich and the poor. There are thieves, liars, cheats, gossips, discouragers, and doubters – amongst others. Not one of us is worthy of a place. Not one of us is in a position to judge who should or should not be on the train. In rising from death Jesus restores us to Him. He redeems us, but not just us - all of creation. This glorious journey is all about Him. It’s a journey we don’t want anyone missing out on.
